Landscapes
Inspired by photographs I've taken at home and whilst on various holidays (and sometimes purely serendipitous imaginings brought to life by experimenting). My style is largely influenced by an Australia based (brilliant) professional watercolour artist called Scott Swinson who I have learned so much from.
Sundown over Mullion
Inspired by many happy memories of family holidays with our in-laws living in Mullion Cove, Cornwall - with hats off to Scott Swinson again for style.
"channeling Turner" I
My attempt at a sunset in the style of my all time favorite artist JMW Turner - using a pallet knife, neat watercolour pigment and lots of water. (another version using brushes is shown below - this was my first attempt)
* currently exhibiting at Elizabeth House, Cookham *
Costa Rica Sunset
A view over Golfito from Cielo Lodge resort circa January 2025. With deep gratitude to our hosts Keith and Nicole Goldstien and their fantastic crew.
Firelake
Inspired by sunsets on the Cornish coastline. An example of how watercolour effectively paints itself. In its first showing I was actually going to discard this one as a dull failure until a mentor at Maidenhead Painting Club (thanks Katrina!) suggested "just drop a bit of orange in the middle" - the simple Zenlike genius of a proper artist!
Mount Fuji, November 25
Inspired by a photo taken by a good friend on his family visit in 2025.
Sunrise over Kruger National Park
From a picture taken over a lake during one of our early morning sorties into the park to spot big animals (yes the moon really was visible!)
Tower Bridge sunrise
From a photo of tower bridge in London early on a very wet Friday morning in November 2023.
Odney Club - Cookham
In the grounds of the John Lewis Partnership members club in Cookham. A hat tip to Monet inspired.
Ngorongoro Crater
A view over the Ngorongoro crater Tanzania. Just as you enter into and descend down the 2000 feet deep crater perimeter slopes.
Moon over lake
Abstract inspired by inspired winter walks
Seaton beach, Sundown
Memories of a wonderful few days away on the South Devon Coastline with my lovely wife Anita (Summer 2023)
"channeling" Turner II
Another version of this picture inspired by one of JMW Turner's many sunsets over the Thames in London. This time using brushes and more subtle application of pigments.
Constellation
Just using grey scale - stars reflected in a lake
Waterfall abstract
Inspiration from the many waterfalls encountered on our Costa Rica trip Jan 2025.
Cliveden Thames Bankside
A mile downstream of Boulters lock, Maidenhead - under the Cliveden Gardens
Odney Club - Cookham
More than a passing tip of the hat to C Monet, this beautiful bridge sits over the stream at John Lewis Odney Club in Cookham.
Early morning lake
Another tip of the hat towards Turner - inspired by Scott Swinson.
Alpine waterway
Another "card swipe" gift from Serendipity.
Citadel (abstract)
"Card swipe" abstract - uncovers a medieval town over a dried up river bed in winter (or whatever you want it to be!)
Southwold boathouse
A dilapidated boathouse and dingeys in dry dock on the estuary into Southwold (Suffolk)
Sunset over Golfito - Costa Rica
From a photograph taken from Cielo Lodge Cielo Lodge: A Luxury, Rainforest Eco Lodge in Costa Rica
Sunset from Hope Cove, Devon
From a photograph taken whilst visiting dear friends at Hope Cove.
Distant Industry
Serendipitous imaginary landscape discovered using "card swipe" technique - inspired by views across the Thames estuary at Southend Essex.
Aurora over SL6
A rare appearance of the Northern Lights over Maidenhead (2024) - a depiction from a photograph I took.
Woodland snowy walk
Inspired by walks in The Clumps at Knowl Hill where I grew up and the home built by my mum and dad.
